Participants can tour Skardu town, visit local bazaars, or simply relax at the hotel in preparation for the trek ahead.
Day 03: Drive to Askole Village
On this Day
The tour begins with an exhilarating jeep ride through the picturesque Shigar Valley, following the Braldu River to Askole. This arduous trek takes six to eight hours and passes through breathtaking scenery and remote communities. Askole is the last populated village before the journey. Depending on road conditions, participants may start walking earlier. The day closes with camp setup and preparation for the upcoming trekking part.
Day 04: Trek from Askole to Jhola via Biafo Glacier Snout
On this Day
Following final preparations, the hike to Jhola begins, skirting the Biafo Glacier's snout. Participants will go moraine walking and then descend to a lunch spot near the Korofon River. The trail continues along the Braldu River, passing over a bridge before following the riverbed. The day begins with a moderate trek across different terrain and ends at the Jhola campground, which is surrounded by stunning mountain vistas.
Day 05: Trek from Jhola to Paiju following the Braldu River
On this Day
The trek follows the Braldu gorge, offering breathtaking views of Trango Towers and Cathedral Peak. The terrain is arid and hot, necessitating sun protection. Depending on the water level, crossing several glacial streams may need caution. On clear days, the Baltoro Glacier snout is visible. The day closes with a gradual ascent away from the river to Paiju camp, the last tree-covered campground before entering the glacial wasteland.
Day 06: Acclimatize and Rest in Paiju
On this Day
This rest day in Paiju is necessary for acclimatization. Participants can do small hikes up the Paiju Peak base camp to allow their bodies to acclimate to the altitude. Meanwhile, porters prepare food, such as bread, for the next few days on the glacier. The tranquil setting, surrounded by vegetation and towering peaks, provides an ideal opportunity to unwind, hydrate, and psychologically prepare for the more strenuous walk ahead.
Day 07: Trek from Paiju to Khoburtse
On this Day
The trek becomes more difficult as they approach the Baltoro Glacier. Walking entails traversing glacial moraine with many ascents and descents. Throughout the day, spectacular vistas of the Trango Towers and Uli Biaho Peaks emerge. Before reaching Liligo, the trail crosses sections of the glacier and then continues to Khoburtse via rough terrain. As participants adjust to the conditions of glacier hiking, they must maintain careful footing.
Day 08: Cross Small Glaciers and Walk to Urdukas
On this Day
As they travel farther into the Karakoram, the participants cross minor glaciers. The massive Trango Towers dominate the skyline and provide a striking backdrop. The path entails steady trekking over rough terrain before arriving at Urdukas, a campground above the glacier near an army camp. This altitude site provides panoramic views of the surrounding peaks and glaciers, making it one of the more scenic camps on the Baltoro trail.
Day 09: Trek to Goro II
On this Day
The journey continues on the Baltoro Glacier, following the medial moraine. To the south, the spectacular Masherbrum rises dramatically. The trail climbs and descends across steep and snowy terrain, encountering magnificent ice formations. The camp is located at Goro II, at the junction of glaciers. Temperatures drop dramatically here, but the vistas of nearby peaks such as Muztagh Tower make the effort worthwhile.
Day 10: Trek to Concordia through a Rocky Moraine
On this Day
Participants travel to Concordia, a famed glacier meeting site. As the journey progresses, towering peaks gradually emerge, culminating in the first glimpse of K2. Other summits, including Broad Peak and Gasherbrum, become visible. The spectacular terrain and sensation of isolation make this one of the most gratifying days of the journey.
Day 11: Trek to Shahring
On this Day
Concordia to Shahring is a reasonably short walk along the upper Baltoro Glacier. The trek provides constant views of spectacular peaks such as Chogolisa and Snow Dome. The terrain is made up of glacial moraine, which requires a steady pace. The campsite at Shahring offers a unique perspective point surrounded by towering mountains, allowing participants to completely immerse themselves in the high-altitude environment.
Day 12: Trek to Gasherbrum I & II Base Camps
On this Day
Participants walk to the base camps of Gasherbrum I and Gasherbrum II. The trail winds through desolate glacier terrain, offering amazing views of the neighboring peaks. Upon arrival, the base camp provides a strange atmosphere beneath towering ice walls and snow-covered peaks. This is a significant milestone in the expedition, allowing time to relax and prepare for the difficult passage ahead.
Day 13–16: Gasherbrum La Pass Trekking Days
On this Day
During these trekking days, trekkers will try the challenging Gasherbrum La at 6,511 metres. The route includes glacier travel, high ascents, and maybe tricky sections depending on the conditions. Weather and altitude play an important role, necessitating flexibility and cautious timing. These days are physically and psychologically demanding, but they provide unparalleled views of nearby peaks and a profound sense of success as you reach higher levels.
Day 17: Trek back to Gasherbrum I & II Base Camps
On this Day
After completing the pass attempt, competitors return to the Gasherbrum base camps. The return flight provides a safer descent while viewing familiar sights from a fresh angle. The body begins to recuperate from high-altitude exertion, and the campsite offers a comfortable place to rest. Reflections on successfully reaching the pass add a sense of accomplishment to the expedition experience.
Day 18: Trek to Concordia
On this Day
Participants retrace their route back to Concordia, gradually descending via glacier terrain. The return ride provides additional photographic chances as changing light and perspective highlight various characteristics of the Karakoram giants. The trip is less strenuous than the ascent, but it still requires caution on uneven terrain. Arriving at Concordia provides a sense of familiarity and comfort in one of the most recognizable high-altitude camps.
Day 19: Trek to Goro II
On this Day
The fall continues down the Baltoro Glacier toward Goro II. Participants go over moraine and ice portions while admiring the fading views of lofty peaks. The progressive drop in altitude begins to reduce physical strain. Camp Goro II provides a comfortable resting place for participants to reflect on their adventure and rediscover the magnificent glacial environment.
Day 20: Trek to Khoburtse with Views of Trango Towers
On this Day
Participants descend by the same glacier route to Khoburtse, passing through Goro I and Urdukas. The return ride provides new vistas on the famed Trango Towers, which are even more spectacular from this direction. Although the trail is well-known, the scenery feels completely new. The descent is steady, and the campsite at Khoburtse gives a welcome break after a long day of walking.
Day 21: Trek back to Camp Paiju
On this Day
The track continues down the glacier near Liligo, where participants move from unstable moraine to more secure ground. Vegetation gradually reappears, indicating a return to lower altitudes. Arriving at Paiju is refreshing since participants are surrounded by trees after days of walking over a stony area. The campsite provides a calm location in which to unwind and celebrate your accomplishment on the walk.
Day 22: Trek to Jhola Campsite
On this Day
The hike continues up the Braldu gorge, using a less strenuous route than before. Depending on the water level, participants may need to cross rivers. The terrain becomes more bearable, allowing for a consistent pace. Arriving at Jhola campground is a return to familiar territory, providing a comfortable location to recover and prepare for the final portions of the trip.
Day 23: Trek to Askole & Drive to Skardu
On this Day
Participants finish the final hiking segment back to Askole by following the river and reaching the bridge. Upon arriving, jeeps were waiting to bring the group back to Skardu. The trip is a pleasant break for tired legs, with breathtaking sights along the way. Returning to Skardu provides comfort, good amenities, and an opportunity to commemorate the successful end of the trekking expedition.
Day 24: Contingency Day for Trek Delays
On this Day
This day is set aside for unforeseen delays due to weather, road conditions, or other circumstances. If time allows, travelers might tour Skardu, including neighboring lakes and cultural sites. The buffer ensures itinerary flexibility and prevents missed planned flights. It also allows people more time to unwind and reflect on the hiking experience before returning to Islamabad.
Day 25: Fly to Islamabad
On this Day
Participants fly back from Skardu to Islamabad, getting one more aerial view of the Karakoram. When they arrive, they go to their hotel to rest and unwind.
