Itinerary – Nazbar Pass Trek – 13 days

The itinerary for the Nazbar Pass Trek is listed below.

On this Day

A picturesque flight or a full-day drive over the Karakoram Highway are both options for getting to Gilgit. The flight provides breathtaking aerial views of snow-capped peaks, while the drive highlights magnificent scenery, rivers, and mountain valleys. When the participant arrives in Gilgit, they check into a hotel and recover after their long travel. The village is a key hub for expeditions, allowing for the final coordination of supplies, permits, and logistics before heading deeper into the Ghizer region.

On this Day

After breakfast, the crew heads to Yasin Valley in Ghizer District, passing via winding mountain roads with breathtaking views of rivers and harsh landscape. The ride progressively transforms into quieter and more distant environs, capturing the region's natural beauty. Upon arrival, participants check into a local guesthouse and connect with the locals. The rest of the day is spent recuperating and adjusting to the increased altitude, as well as psychologically and physically preparing for the impending journey.

On this Day

The expedition continues deeper into the remote Nazbar Valley, a lush and picturesque sub-valley of Yasin, famed for its natural beauty and sparse human presence. The crew travels through small towns, interacting with locals and organizing guides and porters. Once in Baltaring Village, final trekking plans are made, including load distribution and route discussion. The tranquil surroundings and traditional culture offer a one-of-a-kind cultural experience, as the crew prepares to enter completely inaccessible terrain the next day.

On this Day

The adventure begins with a jeep ride to Battakushi, but due to rugged terrain, the party must continue on foot before settling. Battakushi is tranquil and sparsely inhabited, reflecting shifts in local habits throughout time. Following a brief respite, the hike continues toward Shaukan, the first campground. The trail traverses wide landscapes with growing solitude and few traces of habitation. By dusk, camp is set up in a peaceful natural location, signaling the start of the wilderness trekking adventure.

On this Day

The group leaves Shaukan behind and ascends across difficult and largely unmarked terrain to the high camp. The path includes a mix of grassy slopes, rocky portions, and moderate height climbs, necessitating a steady pace and careful navigation. As elevation rises, the landscape becomes increasingly harsh and exposed. By late afternoon, the squad has arrived at high camp, which is located at around 4450 meters. After setting up camp, participants relax and prepare for the summit attempt, concentrating on acclimatization and energy conservation for the strenuous climb ahead.

On this Day

The summit attempt begins early, with the team climbing across difficult terrain toward Nazbar Pass. The ascent has glacier portions, soft snow, loose rocks, and steep slopes that require physical endurance and attentiveness. After several hours of ascending, the group reaches the pass at around 5000 meters, where stunning panoramic views of the surrounding peaks are revealed. Time is spent monitoring conditions and photographing the moment before carefully examining the descending route, as safety is still the primary issue in this lonely high-altitude setting.

On this Day

Following the summit attempt, the crew begins the descent back to high camp, carefully maneuvering through the same difficult terrain encountered on the ascent. Loose rocks, snow patches, and glacier portions necessitate consistent movement and coordination. Once at high camp, athletes rest and recover from the physically demanding ascent. The feeling is one of relief and satisfaction, as the team reflects on reaching such a remote and rarely traveled pass while guaranteeing safety during the journey.

On this Day

The drop continues as the crew exits high camp and retraces its journey back to Shaukan. Moving to lower elevations provides considerable bodily relief, allowing for a more relaxed pace than in prior days. The landscape changes progressively from rugged alpine mountains to greener settings. Upon arrival at Shaukan, the camp is reestablished in familiar territory. The evening is spent recovering and sharing experiences as the crew relaxes in a lower elevation after the strenuous high-altitude endeavor.

On this Day

From Shaukan, the team descends toward Battakushi and then Yasin Valley. Depending on the terrain, the route alternates between trekking and vehicle transport. Returning to inhabited regions provides consolation after days of isolation. When participants arrive in Yasin, they check into a guesthouse and enjoy proper meals and rest. The day allows you to reconnect with locals, reflect on your excursion, and appreciate the contrast between pristine wilderness and settled valley habitats.

On this Day

After breakfast, the group leaves Yasin Valley and heads back to Gilgit. The drive provides another opportunity to view the dramatic landscapes of the Ghizer region, which include rivers, mountains, and villages along the way. Upon arrival in Gilgit, participants check into their accommodation and take a well-deserved rest. The town gives access to communication, markets, and necessities, allowing the crew to relax after the walk and prepare for the return trip to Islamabad.

On this Day

The return to Islamabad is made by airplane, according to weather circumstances. The brief flight offers breathtaking aerial views of the Karakoram range, providing a final sight of the mountains visited during the adventure. Upon arrival, guests are taken to their hotel, where they can relax or tour the city. The transition from distant high-altitude scenery to metropolitan environs emphasizes the significance of the trek undertaken over the previous days.

On this Day

On the final day, participants are taken to the airport for their overseas departure. The adventure culminates with unforgettable recollections of isolated landscapes, difficult climbs, and cultural encounters in northern Pakistan. The voyage to Nazbar Pass instills a strong sense of adventure and exploration in participants, who return home with a greater appreciation for high-altitude trekking and the pristine beauty of Gilgit-Baltistan.

Overview – Nazbar Pass Trek

The trek is one of Pakistan’s most remote and underexplored high-altitude excursions. This hike, which takes place in Gilgit-Baltistan’s magnificent Yasin Valley, provides raw wildness and unparalleled seclusion. Unlike popular routes, it is largely unrecorded and infrequently used by trekkers. As a result, it attracts explorers seeking authentic off-the-beaten-path adventures. The route winds through beautiful valleys, remote settlements, and harsh alpine peaks. As the journey proceeds, the landscape changes considerably, from verdant meadows to glaciers and stony slopes. Furthermore, the lack of clear paths provides both challenge and excitement.

The ascent to Nazbar Pass, which rises to approximately 5000 meters, is the trek’s peak. This difficult climb requires traversing snowfields, rough scree, and glacier portions. As a result, it necessitates excellent fitness, meticulous planning, and high-altitude awareness. Trekkers can enjoy amazing panoramic views of the surrounding peaks, including distant vistas of Rakaposhi. Furthermore, the location provides exceptional prospects for exploration and possible first ascents. Overall, the trek is perfect for experienced trekkers looking for pristine landscapes and real expedition-style trekking in the Karakoram.
