Itinerary – Surgus La Pass Trek – 16 days

The itinerary for the trek is listed below.

On this Day

Early in the morning, you will be transferred to Islamabad Airport for a picturesque flight to Skardu, weather permitting. This flight provides amazing views of the Himalayan and Karakoram peaks, including Nanga Parbat, if the weather is clear. When you arrive in Skardu, you will be taken to your accommodation. The rest of the day is free for rest, light exploration of the town, or final gear organization before beginning the overland journey.

On this Day

After breakfast, embark on a long but exciting jeep journey from Skardu to Askole, the last inhabited village before entering the high mountains. The route includes difficult roads beside rivers and spectacular landscapes, providing glimpses of distant valleys. Upon arrival in Askole, set up camp and meet the support staff, which includes porters. Spend the evening preparing for the trek while admiring the tranquil surroundings of this remote mountain village.

On this Day

Your hike begins today with a moderate walk along the Braldu River. The trail winds over rocky terrain and occasional green areas, offering an introduction to the Karakoram wilderness. You will traverse suspension bridges and take in vistas of towering cliffs. After several hours of trekking, arrive at the Jhola campground to recover and acclimatize. The evening is spent relaxing by the river, surrounded by the peaceful mountain backdrop.

On this Day

Today's hike continues along the river, gently ascending as the valley narrows. The path is uneven, with exposed terrain and several severe climbs. Along the route, take in breathtaking vistas of rocky peaks and glacier-fed streams. After a long day of trekking, you'll arrive at Sok Camp, a tranquil and gorgeous campsite. Spend the evening recovering and preparing for the more difficult days ahead as you venture deeper into the mountains.

On this Day

The trail today takes you toward Surgus Base Camp, with increasingly dramatic scenery surrounding you. You will cross a river and ascend in the right direction toward the base of the pass. The landscape gets rougher, with moraines and stony roads dominating the route. As you reach base camp, the views expand to reveal majestic peaks and glaciers. Set up the tent and recuperate, as tomorrow's climb will be more difficult.

On this Day

After breakfast, begin the ascent toward High Camp, gaining significant altitude over a short distance. The trail is steep, requiring careful footing across rocky and glacial terrain. As you ascend higher, the air becomes thinner, necessitating a consistent pace. When you get to High Camp, you may enjoy panoramic views of the surrounding peaks and valleys. Spend the afternoon recuperating and acclimatizing, psychologically and physically ready to traverse the pass the next day.

On this Day

Today is the most difficult and rewarding day of the trek, as you cross the Surgus La Pass. Starting early, you will climb tough slopes to reach the summit at 5,440 meters. The views from the pass are breathtaking, providing a wide panorama of the Karakoram. After some time at the summit, you'll set up camp near the pass for an unforgettable overnight adventure in the high-altitude environment.

On this Day

After an early breakfast, start your descent from the pass to the Trango Glacier. The terrain is steep and demands attention, particularly in slippery or icy areas. As you descend, the terrain progressively transforms, displaying gigantic granite towers and glacial features. The view of the Trango Towers is quite stunning. When you arrive at the glacier area, set up a tent and take in the breathtaking scenery, signaling the end of your high pass journey.

On this Day

Today's hike brings you to Shipton Camp, also known as Trango Base Camp. The path follows glacier and moraine terrain, necessitating cautious navigation. As you approach the campsite, the towering Trango peaks dominate the skyline, producing a very breathtaking scene. Shipton Camp provides one of the most spectacular views of the Karakoram. Spend the afternoon resting, photographing, and admiring the breathtaking natural beauty that surrounds you.

On this Day

You will leave Shipton Camp and head toward Paiju, which is near the Baltoro Glacier. The trail progressively declines, with a mixture of stony roads and sandy soil. Along the journey, take in the views of the glacier and neighboring peaks. When you arrive in Paiju, you'll notice that the campsite is much greener than in prior spots. This is an excellent area to unwind, wash, and recover after several days at higher altitudes.

On this Day

As you return to Jhola, you'll be retracing some of your previous steps. The descent is more doable, allowing you to walk at a leisurely pace while seeing the surroundings from a different angle. The familiar landscapes feel rejuvenating after the strenuous high-altitude days. After arriving at Jhola, set up a tent and rest by the river, reminiscing on your fantastic trek over the Karakoram.

On this Day

Today is the final hiking day, as you return to Askole via familiar valleys and the Braldu River. The descent is moderate, allowing travelers a leisurely pace while seeing the final views of the beautiful Karakoram scenery. Passing through Jhola and the surrounding countryside, you will observe how the panorama changes upon your return. When you arrive in Askole, celebrate your team's successful completion of the trek.

On this Day

After breakfast, continue the return trip by jeep from Askole to Skardu. The drive continues along the same rough terrain, providing one final opportunity to view the region's spectacular vistas. When you arrive in Skardu, transfer to your accommodation and enjoy the luxuries of civilization after days in the wilderness. The evening is free for relaxation, hot baths, and possibly a celebratory meal with your trekking companions.

On this Day

Today, weather permitting, you will fly back from Skardu to Islamabad. The flight once again provides breathtaking aerial views of the mountains. When you arrive in Islamabad, you will be transferred to your hotel. The rest of the day is free to relax, shop, or explore the capital city. This is also an excellent opportunity to reflect on your trekking adventure and enjoy your final days in Pakistan.

On this Day

Following breakfast, you will be taken to Islamabad International Airport for your departure flight. As your journey comes to an end, you will have lasting recollections of the Surgus La Pass walk, the spectacular Karakoram mountains, and the unique cultural and environmental experiences you encountered along the way.
