Itinerary – Savoia Pass Trek – 28 days

The itinerary for the trek is listed below.

On this Day

Participants enjoy a beautiful flight from Islamabad to Skardu, which provides stunning aerial views of the Himalayan and Karakoram peaks, including Nanga Parbat, if the weather permits. After arriving in Skardu, you can spend the remainder of the day relaxing, exploring the town, or preparing for the hike. This tranquil day allows for acclimation to the high terrain and time to organize things for the upcoming expedition.

On this Day

Today begins with a jeep ride through the breathtaking Shigar Valley to Askole, following the winding route of the Braldu River. The rocky trip takes you through isolated landscapes and small communities until arriving at Askole, the last populated village on the road. Depending on road conditions, trekking may begin before arriving at the settlement. The trek lasts six to eight hours and provides an exciting introduction to the region, marking the transition from civilization to wilderness.

On this Day

After preparing supplies, the trek officially begins as porters transport equipment to Jhola. The trail travels through a valley near the snout of the Biafo Glacier, where hikers will walk on rugged moraine terrain. The track dips until a lunch halt near the Korofon River before continuing to the Braldu River. The path crosses a bridge upstream and follows the riverbed until it reaches Jhola campground, which is surrounded by stunning vistas and the sound of running water.

On this Day

The trail follows the Braldu River through a dry and steep gorge. Trekkers are rewarded with vistas of recognizable summits like Trango Towers and Cathedral Peak. Depending on the water level, crossing several glacier-fed streams may necessitate caution. The weather might be scorching, so sunscreen is recommended. The day ends with a moderate ascent away from the river to Paiju, the final campground with greenery before entering the glacier region.

On this Day

Paiju provides participants with a full day of rest and acclimatization to assist them in adjusting to the altitude. Trekkers can take a short climb to Paiju Peak Base Camp for better acclimatization and magnificent views. Meanwhile, porters prepare food, such as bread, for the next few days on the glacier. This day is critical for increasing strength and lowering altitude-related dangers, ensuring that everyone is adequately prepared for the difficult terrain ahead.

On this Day

As hikers approach the Baltoro Glacier, the difficulty of the walk increases. The trail consists of continual ups and downs across a rocky moraine, necessitating cautious footing. As the environment opens up, breathtaking vistas of Trango Towers and Uli Biaho Peak emerge. The road finally leads to Khoburtse, where a campground is established along the glacier's edge. The stunning scenery signals the start of high-altitude trekking in the Karakoram.

On this Day

Trekkers pass smaller glaciers as they progress along the Baltoro trail, gradually gaining elevation. The majestic Trango Towers become more visible as the journey continues. The walk leads to Urdukas, a picturesque campsite overlooking the glacier near an army barracks. Urdukas, located on a grassy ledge about 100 meters above the ice, provides stunning panoramic views of the surrounding peaks, making it one of the most scenic campgrounds on the walk.

On this Day

Today's path follows the Baltoro Glacier's medial moraine, with several ascents and descents through rocky terrain. To the south, the massive Masherbrum dominates the skyline. Before arriving at Goro II, which is located at the confluence of the Baltoro and Younghusband glaciers, hikers walk through magnificent ice formations and seracs. This is the first night spent totally on the glacier, where temperatures drop dramatically, and the surrounding peaks provide a spectacular alpine setting.

On this Day

The trip continues across the glacier's stony moraine toward Concordia, also known as the "Throne Room of the Gods." As trekkers progress, enormous peaks emerge, including K2, Broad Peak, and Gasherbrum. The landscape grows more spectacular as enormous glaciers converge at this landmark spot. Reaching Concordia is a key highlight of the journey, with breathtaking vistas of some of the world's tallest mountains.

On this Day

An early start leads trekkers across the Godwin-Austen Glacier to Broad Peak Base Camp and then to K2 Base Camp. The trail is long but rewarding, as K2 gets bigger with each step. After leaving Broad Peak Base Camp, trekkers stop at the Gilkey Memorial to remember climbers who died on K2. The day provides spectacular close-up views of K2 and the surrounding peaks before returning to camp, making it one of the expedition's most memorable experiences.

On this Day

These days are dedicated to the steady rise and successful climb of Savoia Pass, with time for acclimatization, weather conditions, and route planning. Participants set up higher camps, practice glacier and snow procedures, and gradually gain elevation while adjusting to the altitude. Guided by expert mountaineers, the team carefully analyzes conditions to find the ideal summit window. The climb provides stunning panoramic views of the Karakoram, making this phase both physically challenging and extremely rewarding.

On this Day

Leaving Concordia behind, trekkers descend the Baltoro Glacier towards Goro I. The route becomes simpler as height decreases, although caution is still essential on rough terrain. The views remain stunning, with familiar peaks now seen from a different angle. Camp is established at Goro I or Biango, which marks the shift from high-altitude hiking to trekking.

On this Day

The return journey follows the glacier, retracing steps towards Khoburtse. Although the journey is similar, the changing light and direction create completely fresh perspectives. Trango Towers return, this time from a different perspective. The descent is steady, and the terrain becomes more bearable as the hikers get closer to the campground.

On this Day

Trekkers descend through Liligo, leaving the glacier and returning to more stable terrain. The return of flora and trees is a wonderful sight after days spent on ice and rock. The walk grows easier, and the atmosphere feels warmer and more inviting. Arriving at Paiju allows you to relax and enjoy your surroundings.

On this Day

The journey continues up the Braldu Gorge, following the same route as before. The trail is simpler, but some river crossings may still be required. The descent allows trekkers to reflect on their experiences while taking in the changing surroundings. Camp is located in Jhola.

On this Day

Participants make the walk back to Askole, where jeeps await their return to Skardu. The walk follows the river until it reaches the bridge, which marks the end of the excursion. After lunch, the drive back to Skardu provides an opportunity to unwind and reflect on the adventure.

On this Day

This day is set aside for delays caused by weather or traffic conditions. If time permits, participants can explore Skardu, visit local sites, or unwind at the hotel. The extra day provides flexibility and prevents missed scheduled flights.

On this Day

Participants return to Islamabad, enjoying another spectacular flight over the mountains. When they arrive, they go to the hotel to rest. In the event of a flight cancellation, an alternative drive to Chilas is scheduled.

On this Day

Participants are taken to the airport for their international flights home. The expedition culminates with unforgettable memories of the Karakoram experience, new friendships, and the accomplishment of walking to Savoia Pass and beyond.
