Itinerary – Chongtar Pass Trek – 28 days
The itinerary for the trek is listed below.
Day 02: Fly to Skardu, Karakoram
On this Day
Participants will take an early morning scenic flight from Islamabad to Skardu, which will provide stunning aerial views of the Karakoram range, including Nanga Parbat if conditions allow. After arriving in Skardu, the rest of the day is free for relaxation and acclimatization. Participants can take a stroll through town or relax at the hotel before embarking on their excursion into the distant Baltoro region.
Day 03: Drive to Askole Village
On this Day
The adventure begins with a vehicle safari through the stunning Shigar Valley, which follows the Braldu River to Askole. The difficult drive takes six to eight hours, traveling through breathtaking scenery and secluded towns. Askole is the final inhabited village before entering the wilderness. Depending on the road conditions, participants may start walking before settling. After arriving, final preparations are completed before formally beginning the trek into the Karakoram.
Day 04: Trek from Askole to Jhola via Biafo Glacier Snout
On this Day
Porters carry equipment after sorting supplies before the trek to Jhola begins. The route takes participants along the snout of the Biafo Glacier, where they will experience moraine walking before descending to the Korofon River for lunch. The trail continues till it reaches the confluence of the Braldu and Domordo rivers. Participants cross a bridge and follow the riverside until they reach Jhola campground, which is surrounded by stunning valley scenery and running glacier waters.
Day 05: Trek from Jhola to Paiju
On this Day
The trail continues along the Braldu River through a dry and steep gorge, providing superb views of Trango Towers and Cathedral Peak. Participants must stay hydrated and protected from the sun as temperatures climb. Several glacier streams may necessitate cautious crossings. As the trail ascends slightly away from the river, hikers arrive at Paiju, the last campsite with trees, providing a nice natural environment before entering glacier territory.
Day 06: Acclimatization and Rest in Paiju
On this Day
This day is designated for acclimatization at Paiju camp, allowing participants to adjust to the increasing altitude. Short hikes to Paiju Peak Base Camp are recommended to improve adaptation. Meanwhile, porters prepare food, such as bread, for the upcoming days on the glacier. The tranquil settings and vegetation provide a welcome respite before the strenuous trip across the Baltoro Glacier begins in the coming days.
Day 07: Trek from Paiju to Khoburtse
On this Day
As hikers approach the Baltoro Glacier, the difficulty of the walk increases. The course traverses rough moraine terrain, with several ascents and descents. Despite the hardships, the panorama becomes more stunning, with close-up views of Trango Towers and Uli Biaho. The trail crosses sections of the glacier before arriving at Khoburtse, where camp is placed along the glacier's edge, with amazing views of neighboring peaks.
Day 08: Trek to Urdukas
On this Day
Participants continue up the Baltoro Glacier, crossing tiny glacier portions. The majestic Trango Towers dominate the skyline and offer breathtaking vistas. The trail gradually ascends to Urdukas, which sits on a grassy ledge above the glacier near an army camp. This campsite provides one of the most magnificent sites on the entire climb, with panoramic views of the glacier and surrounding Karakoram giants.
Day 09: Trek to Goro II
On this Day
The journey continues down the center Baltoro Glacier, following the medial moraine. Participants see stunning ice formations, including towering seracs, while admiring vistas of Masherbrum and Muztagh Towers. The terrain consists of steady ascents and descents on rough ice. Participants who reach Goro II, located at the confluence of the Baltoro and Younghusband glaciers, will face cooler temperatures and a genuinely alpine setting surrounded by towering peaks.
Day 10: Trek to Concordia
On this Day
Participants walk gradually over rough moraine, approaching Concordia, one of the world's most stunning glacier intersections. The initial vista of K2 is a highlight among the towering peaks. Other visible peaks are Broad Peak, Gasherbrum, and Mitre Peak. Concordia, with its stunning alpine amphitheater, is a really unforgettable destination and a significant milestone in the journey.
Day 11: Trek to Broad Peak BC, and K2 Base Camp
On this Day
An early start takes participants across the Godwin-Austen Glacier to Broad Peak Base Camp and then to K2 Base Camp. The trail follows a stony glacier path, with K2 rising larger by the day. After reaching Broad Peak Base Camp, participants stop by the Gilkey Memorial to remember climbers who died on K2. The day provides close-up views of the world's second-highest mountain, making it one of the most memorable parts of the climb.
Day 12–20: Climbing Days (Chongtar Pass)
On this Day
These days will be spent ascending and exploring Chongtar Pass, a remote high-altitude glacier pass located northwest of K2 Base Camp in the Baltoro Muztagh Range. Participants cross challenging glacier terrain, including crevasses and snow slopes, while progressively increasing elevation. The climb necessitates deliberate pace, technical knowledge, and acclimatization. Weather conditions are critical, and numerous tries or rest days may be required to successfully reach and return from the pass to Concordia.
Day 21: Trek to Goro I/Biango
On this Day
Participants leave the high camps behind and begin their return journey to Goro I. The descent is rather easy, along the same glacier route but with less physical strain. When viewed in reverse, the familiar landscape looks different, providing new perspectives on peaks and ice formations. Camp is located at Goro I or Biango and provides a nice stop after leaving the higher peaks.
Day 22: Trek to Khoburtse
On this Day
Participants continue to descend along the Baltoro Glacier toward Khoburtse. Trango Towers vistas remain stunning as we pass through Urdukas and the familiar landscape. Despite repeating paths, the return journey provides new perspectives and insight into the stunning terrain. The drop is slow, allowing hikers to appreciate the scenery while steadily progressing to lower altitudes and more stable ground.
Day 23: Trek back to Paiju
On this Day
The trail exits the glacier through Liligo into more stable land. Participants increasingly return to areas with flora, signaling a dramatic shift from frigid environments. Trekkers arrive in Paiju and enjoy the comfort of trees and softer ground. The campsite provides a wonderful setting to unwind after several days on the glacier and reflect on the difficult but rewarding high-altitude adventure.
Day 24: Trek to Jhola Campsite
On this Day
The hike continues along the Braldu Gorge, retracing the route to Jhola. The terrain is easier than the previous glacier portions, but river crossings may still be necessary depending on water levels. Participants follow familiar paths, enjoying the warmer weather and changing scenery. When you get to Jhola, you'll find a camp beside the river that provides a nice area to rest.
Day 25: Trek to Askole & Drive to Skardu
On this Day
The participants complete the final trekking section back to Askole village. After crossing the river and arriving at the settlement, the jeeps wait to return the group to Skardu. The drive provides an opportunity to unwind after the walk while exploring the picturesque Shigar Valley. Upon arrival in Skardu, participants head into their accommodation for some much-needed rest.
Day 26: Contingency Day for Delays
On this Day
This day is set aside for unexpected delays caused by weather, road conditions, or trekking problems. It assures that participants do not miss their return flights. If you have the day free, you can spend it touring Skardu, seeing local sights, or simply relaxing. This buffer increases flexibility and safety in the overall expedition strategy.
Day 27: Fly to Islamabad
On this Day
Participants travel back from Skardu to Islamabad, enjoying one final breathtaking flight over the mountains. When they arrive, they are taken to their hotel to rest. In the event of a flight cancellation due to weather, an alternate overland journey to Chilas may be arranged. The day gives participants time to relax and reflect on their journey.
Day 28: Fly to home country
On this Day
Participants are taken to the airport based on their departure times. With recollections of the Karakoram and Chongtar Pass Trek, the adventure comes to an end. Hotel check-out is usually at midday, and the staff ensures a smooth transition. The trip gives participants vivid memories of one of the world's most stunning trekking destinations.
