Itinerary – KhalKhal Pass Trek – 22 days

The itinerary for the trek is listed below.

On this Day

Participants take an early-morning flight from Islamabad to Skardu, one of the world's most picturesque routes. If the weather permits, breathtaking aerial vistas of Nanga Parbat can be observed. Upon arrival in Skardu, the day is set aside for relaxation and acclimatization. Participants can go around town or rest at the hotel while mentally prepared for their impending hiking trip in the Karakoram mountains.

On this Day

The journey starts with a jeep ride through the Shigar Valley, following the roaring Braldu River to Askole, the final inhabited village before the walk. The road is steep and challenging, with breathtaking alpine scenery. Depending on the road conditions, trekking may begin before reaching Askole. The long drive takes six to eight hours, allowing participants to gradually shift from civilization to the isolated nature of Baltistan.

On this Day

Following final preparations, the walk to Jhola begins, crossing the Biafo Glacier's snout. The trip entails traveling over moraine terrain before descending to the Korofon River for lunch. Participants continue along the Braldu River, crossing a bridge and following a lovely trail upstream. The campsite at Jhola is located beside the river and marks the first night in the woods, surrounded by high cliffs and glacial vistas.

On this Day

The walk follows the Braldu River through a spectacular gorge, with panoramic mountain views. Participants may notice iconic landforms such as Trango Towers. The terrain is dry and hot, necessitating sunscreen and hydration. Several glacier streams may necessitate cautious crossings. The day concludes at Paiju, a pleasant campsite with trees that provides a wonderful contrast before entering the harsh glacial area ahead.

On this Day

This rest day is necessary for acclimatization before venturing onto the Baltoro Glacier. Participants can take short walks to Paiju Peak base camp while porters prepare provisions, such as bread for the next day. The relaxing schedule allows the body to adjust to the altitude while enjoying vistas of the surrounding peaks. The greenery of Paiju offers a rare respite before hitting the severe and beautiful glacial scenery.

On this Day

The climb continues along the Baltoro Glacier, where the terrain becomes more difficult, with constant ascents and descents over stony moraine. The scenery grows more dramatic, with close-ups of Trango Towers and Uli Biaho. The trail traverses the glacier toward Liligo before continuing down a rocky edge to Khoburtse. Participants must tread carefully because the terrain is difficult, but the reward is spectacular alpine vistas along the way.

On this Day

Participants pass fewer glaciers before continuing on the Baltoro Glacier, where breathtaking vistas of the Trango Towers become more apparent. The campground at Urdukas is beautifully situated on grassy slopes above the glacier, providing one of the greatest views of the entire hike. This hilltop camp offers panoramic views of the surrounding peaks and glaciers, making it an unforgettable break before continuing into the upper Karakoram.

On this Day

The walk continues along the Baltoro Glacier's central moraine, surrounded by immense glacial landscapes. To the south, Masherbrum dominates the skyline. The path winds through rocky peaks and past enormous ice formations. The Goro II campsite is located near the junction of glaciers, where temperatures drop substantially, making it the expedition's first true high-altitude camping experience.

On this Day

Participants will walk over the rocky moraine to reach Concordia, one of the world's most iconic hiking sites. Surrounded by towering peaks, notably K2, the location provides unparalleled panoramic vistas. Broad Peak and Gasherbrum Peak are two other notable landmarks. The sensation of vastness and remoteness here is incredible, making this day a highlight for hikers standing in the heart of the Karakoram.

On this Day

An early start leads across the Godwin-Austen Glacier to Broad Peak Base Camp and then to K2 Base Camp. K2's towering majesty draws closer with each step. Participants pay their respects at the Gilkey Memorial, which honors climbers who died on the mountain. The terrain is rough and glacial, necessitating a steady pace. This lengthy but rewarding day ends at the base of the world's second-highest mountain, providing an amazing experience.

On this Day

The path departs from K2 Base Camp and heads toward KhalKhal Pass, where it enters a more rural and less visited territory. The ascent comprises steep glacier navigation and rough terrain, which requires concentration and endurance. The campsite is located near the pass, surrounded by spectacular ice formations and towering peaks. This part provides a true expedition sense, away from the main Baltoro path, with seclusion and raw mountain scenery.

On this Day

The participants descend from KhalKhal Pass to Pastore Base Camp, crossing icy terrain and rocky slopes. The trail provides breathtaking vistas of secret valleys that are rarely visited by conventional trekkers. The descent demands careful footing, but it is rewarded with magnificent views of the Karakoram. Camp at Pastore offers a peaceful environment away from popular trekking paths, highlighting the expedition's adventurous and exploratory aspect.

On this Day

The return line connects with the Baltoro system and leads back to Concordia. The method provides new viewpoints on familiar summits, making the environment appear completely different. Participants retrace their routes across glacial terrain before eventually rejoining the main trekking corridor. Arriving at Concordia affords another opportunity to appreciate the surrounding giants, highlighting why this place is regarded as the throne room of mountain gods.

On this Day

The descent continues until Goro I/Biango, following the glacier downstream. The terrain becomes gentler than in previous days, allowing participants to relax significantly while still managing the moraine. As the group advances away from Concordia, their opinions on the peaks change. Camp is set up in a protected area, indicating steady progress on the return route through the Baltoro Glacier.

On this Day

Participants continue their descent along the glacier, crossing Urdukas and enjoying new vistas of Trango Towers. Although the trail is identical, the opposite direction offers radically distinct sight experiences. The terrain is uneven, but workable. Arriving in Khoburtse provides a sense of comfort while still offering an impressive landscape as the group returns to lower altitudes.

On this Day

The trail continues down the Baltoro Glacier into Paiju, crossing Liligo and leaving the moraine behind. The return to lush surroundings and trees is welcome after days spent on ice and rock. Participants can unwind at the Paiju campground, enjoying the comforts of a more welcoming environment. This is an important milestone because the most difficult glacial parts are now behind us.

On this Day

The journey continues along the Braldu Gorge toward Jhola. The terrain becomes more manageable, though some river crossings may still be necessary depending on water levels. The environment shifts from glacial to stony valley terrain. Camp Jhola offers a tranquil environment beside the river, allowing campers to reflect on their trek across the high mountains.

On this Day

The final trekking segment takes participants back to Askole village via the river trail. Upon arriving, the jeeps drive the group back to Skardu. After spending days in the distant countryside, the trip provides a welcome return to civilization. Arrival at Skardu provides for rest, hot showers, and celebration of completing a difficult and rewarding journey.

On this Day

This day is set aside for any delays caused by weather or logistical concerns. If time allows, travelers can explore Skardu by visiting local markets, lakes, and cultural places. It gives flexibility so that flight schedules are not missed. The moderate pace allows for recovery after the journey while taking in the region's picturesque charm.

On this Day

Participants will fly back to Islamabad from Skardu, weather permitting. In the event of a flight cancellation, an alternative car trip to Chilas may be organized. Upon arrival in Islamabad, participants settle into their accommodation and spend the evening comfortably. This day represents the transition from the rough highlands to city life.

On this Day

Participants are taken to the airport based on their departure times. The adventure ends with recollections of glaciers, high peaks, and isolated passages. The trip leaves enduring recollections of the Karakoram's magnificence, as well as the completion of both the KhalKhal and Chongtar trekking routes.
