Itinerary – Ste Ste Saddle Climb – 22 days

The itinerary for the climb is listed below.

On this Day

In the morning, you'll take a picturesque flight from Islamabad to Skardu, one of the world's most breathtaking mountain flights. Weather permitting, stunning views of Nanga Parbat will unfurl under you. When you arrive in Skardu, you will be transferred to your accommodation and have the remainder of the day at leisure. This period allows your body to adjust to higher altitudes as you appreciate Baltistan's spectacular views.

On this Day

Today's adventure begins with a jeep trip from Skardu to Askole, the last populated village before entering the Karakoram mountains. The path takes you through the magnificent Shigar Valley and along the roaring Braldu River. The journey is lengthy and difficult, lasting six to eight hours depending on road conditions. When you arrive at Askole, you will meet the trekking crew and prepare for the journey, as civilization falls behind you.

On this Day

After final preparations, the trip begins as porters sort cargo and the group departs for Jhola. The trail winds through a large valley, marking the entrance to the huge Biafo Glacier. You'll cross its snout across moraine terrain before descending to a lunch stop along the Korofon River. Continuing, you will cross a bridge over the Domordo River and then follow the Braldu Riverbank to the Jhola campground.

On this Day

Leaving Jhola, the trail follows the Braldu River through a spectacular gorge. The day provides stunning vistas of prominent peaks, including Trango Towers and Cathedral Peak. The terrain can be dry and scorching; sun protection is required. Several glacier-fed streams may demand cautious crossings. Toward the conclusion of the day, you will climb away from the river to Paiju, the last tree-covered campground before entering glacier territory.

On this Day

This is an essential acclimatization day at Paiju Camp, when your body will adjust to the increasing altitude. You can take a short climb to Paiju Peak base camp for breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains. Meanwhile, porters prepare food, such as bread, for the next few days on the glacier. Rest, hydration, and mild movement are encouraged to ensure that you are physically prepared for the more difficult sections of the journey ahead.

On this Day

The walk becomes increasingly difficult as you approach the Baltoro Glacier's rugged terrain. The trail features many ascents and descents over rocky moraine, necessitating careful footing. As you continue, the skyline is dominated by stunning vistas of Trango Towers and Uli Biaho peaks. You will cross sections of the glacier to reach Liligo, then continue down a rocky trail near the glacier's edge to Khoburtse, where you will camp surrounded by towering peaks.

On this Day

Today's route involves traversing smaller glaciers and gradually gaining height. As you get closer, the beautiful Trango Towers become more imposing. The trek leads to Urdukas, a picturesque camping high above the glacier near an army camp. From this elevated elevation, you will get panoramic views of the Baltoro Glacier and surrounding peaks, making this one of the most magnificent campsites on the hike.

On this Day

The trek continues across the Baltoro Glacier, following the medial moraine. To the south, the spectacular Masherbrum peak dominates the horizon. The landscape comprises steep ascents and descents, with sections crossing near towering ice seracs. By dusk, you'll arrive at Goro II, which is located at the confluence of the Baltoro and Younghusband Glaciers. Temperatures decrease drastically here, but the views of the surrounding peaks are simply breathtaking.

On this Day

During these days, the expedition concentrates on the difficult Ste Ste Saddle climb from near Goro II, which combines glacier travel with steep snow and ice ascents. The crew steadily gains altitude, setting up higher camps while carefully managing acclimatization and safety. Climbers negotiate diverse terrain that necessitates consistent pacing and technical knowledge, culminating in a summit push to the saddle with stunning panoramic views of the Karakoram. After crossing the pass, the team descends gently back toward Goro II, fulfilling this challenging but rewarding high-altitude mission.

On this Day

Continuing your trip back to Goro II, you will follow familiar glacier trails. The terrain remains rocky, but becomes more bearable as you descend. The views of Masherbrum and the surrounding peaks remain stunning, providing one more opportunity to savor the high-altitude environment. The camp at Goro II offers a comfortable place to rest and prepare for the next descent.

On this Day

The descent continues toward Khoburtse, passing through Urdukas and following the Baltoro Glacier. The return journey offers new viewpoints, with changing light and angles highlighting new aspects of the environment. The majestic Trango Towers once again dominate the skyline, creating an unforgettable background. Although the path is common, the experience feels new as you gradually descend from high glacier terrain to lower levels.

On this Day

Today's route descends from the glacier via Liligo to more stable terrain. As you leave the moraine, vegetation begins to emerge, providing a welcome change after days on ice and rock. The route becomes easier, allowing for a slower pace. Arriving in Paiju will provide you with the comfort of trees and a warmer environment, marking a crucial milestone in your return journey.

On this Day

The journey continues through the Braldu Gorge, using the same trail as earlier in the trek. Walking conditions are generally better, but some river crossings may still be necessary. The lower altitude and familiar terrain result in a more relaxing day. When you arrive in Jhola, you will set up camp and reflect on your journey across one of the world's most spectacular mountain ranges.

On this Day

On the final trekking day, you'll travel back to Askole along the river, crossing the bridge before arriving at the settlement. After lunch, jeeps will be waiting to take you back to Skardu. The drive follows the steep path via the Shigar Valley. When you arrive in Skardu, you will check into your accommodation and enjoy the amenities of civilization after days in the wilderness.

On this Day

This day is set aside to account for unexpected delays during the trip or return travel, providing flexibility in the event of unanticipated events such as weather or road difficulties. If it remains unused, it can be used to explore Skardu, visit local markets, or rest at the hotel. The extra time allows you to avoid missing your domestic flight and assures a flawless conclusion to the excursion.

On this Day

You'll fly back from Skardu to Islamabad, taking in more breathtaking aerial views of the Karakoram. Upon arrival, you will be transferred to your hotel to rest and unwind. In the event of a flight cancellation due to weather, an alternate drive to Chilas will be provided. The day provides an opportunity to unwind and reflect on your mountain adventures.

On this Day

After breakfast, you will be taken to Islamabad International Airport for your flight home. Hotel check-out is usually at midday, and transfers will be organized based on your flight itinerary. Your journey ends with amazing recollections of the Karakoram, the Ste Ste Saddle climb, and one of the world's most renowned trekking experiences.
