Day 02: Kabul to Bamiyan: Ancient Forts and Mountain Passes
On this Day
The day begins with a stroll along the Shir-Darwaza wall, beginning with Babur's Gardens and continuing to the Bala Hissar Fort, where crucial incidents in the Anglo-Afghan wars occurred. The stroll combines history and breathtaking scenery. After that, the drive continues through Wardak province and over high mountain passes, until arriving in Bamiyan. By evening, you'll tour the abandoned cities of Shahr-e-Zahak and Gholgala, which were destroyed during Genghis Khan's assault. Accommodation in Bamiyan.
Day 03: Bamiyan – Buddhas and Band-e-Amir Lakes

A sunrise walk through the remnants of the Buddhas of Bamiyan is a stunning start, with huge niches spanning across the valley. After seeing the bazaar and chatting with the pleasant residents of Bamiyan, the journey continues to Yawkawlang and the Chehil Burj site, with a halt at the breathtaking Band-e-Amir lakes. In the evening, enjoy a traditional Hazara supper beneath the mulberry trees. Accommodation is provided in a homestay or campsite near Chehil Burj or in a nearby settlement.
Day 04: Chehil Burj to Chagcharan – Hidden Fortresses

The morning is spent exploring Chehil Burj, a historic fortification and archeological site featuring Buddhist niches and defensive walls from the Kushan period. The drive continues on rocky roads, going through Yawkawlang and twisting mountain passes on the way to Chagcharan. Despite its length, the drive offers glimpses into isolated Afghan life. Overnight stay in a hotel.
Day 05: Minaret of Jam - UNESCO Wonder

The trip takes you over rolling green hills to the Minaret of Jam, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that stands out against the scenery. The group will pitch up camp near the monument, with opportunity to walk the surrounding hills and photograph the minaret in shifting light before spending the evening beneath stars. Day 06: Minaret of Jam to Herat – Along the Hari Rud River

This stage is one of the tour's longest drives, following the Hari Rud River to Herat. Along the route, you'll encounter the ruins of Chist, which were included in Rory Stewart's book The Places in Between. Though challenging, the drive provides a genuine sense of adventure. Day 07: Herat – Citadel and Great Mosque

A full day of rest and discovery in Herat allows you to appreciate its historical beauty. Visit the city's majestic castle, the abandoned silk mart, and the spectacular Great Mosque. Shafi Mohammadi will guide you to Herat's workshop, where you will meet the artisans who are restoring historic tiles. Accommodation at the Sadaf International Hotel in Herat.
Day 08: Herat – Vineyards and Countryside

The day is spent away from the city, exploring the fertile countryside and ancient wineries south of Herat. A passage of the approximately millennia-old Pul-i-Malan bridge enhances the experience. A picnic in the vineyards offers a real peek into local rural life.
Day 09: Herat to Lashkah Gah – Through Farah and Nimruz

The journey south passes through the desert regions of Farah and Nimruz. A notable highlight is a visit to the Ahmadi family's architecturally distinctive village, where lunch will be served. By evening, the gang has arrived in Lashkah Gah, the provincial capital of Helmand. Accommodation in a homestay or a local hotel.
Day 10: Lashkar-e-Bazaar and Sangin

The day begins with a hike down the Helmand River from the ruins of Lashkar-e-Bazaar to Qala-e-Bost, which is notable for its ornate 11th-century arch that appears on the Afghani 100 note. After exploring the bazaar, the adventure continues to Sangin, where you will camp under the stars beside Malmul Qala among local elders. Accommodation in a camping/homestay.
Day 11: Kandahar – Ancient Caves and City Life

A short drive gets you to the Shamsher neighborhood, where you may explore a massive cave complex that was previously researched by French archaeologists in the 1950s. The afternoon is spent in Kandahar, where you will explore the bustling bazaar, have native Shir-Yakh ice cream, see Ahmed Shah Baba's mausoleum, and climb the city's forty steps for sunset views. Day 12: Arghandab Valley
On this Day
The day begins with a visit to Old Kandahar, which is associated with Alexander the Great, before moving on to the fertile Arghandab Valley. Known as Mullah Omar's birthplace and a Taliban stronghold, it is now a peaceful location where you may have mantu dumplings with locals, swim at the Dahla Dam, and camp in pomegranate orchards. Day 13: Ghazni – Crossroads of History

A long drive across Zabul province leads to Ghazni, a city known for its ethnic variety and stormy past. It acts as a layover on the way back to Kabul. Khwaja Umari offers accommodation in a 2* hotel or a local homestay.
Day 14: Ghazni to Kabul – Minarets and Buddhist Sites
