The itinerary for the Aral Sea Tour (Tashkent to Khiva) appears below.

On this Day

After a camp-style breakfast, exit the Aral Sea camp for Muynak, passing through the Red Canyons' Martian-like environment. Arrive in Muynak, previously an Amu Darya delta seaport famed as Uzbekistan's sea entrance, and visit the austere "cemetery of the Aral Sea." Return to Nukus and stop at the Mizdakhan necropolis, an ancient cemetery near the remnants of the Gyaur-Kala fortification from the 4th to 3rd century BC. Learn about Gaur Kala, a Zoroastrian town with a castle and a fire altar that existed until the 14th century, and why generations continued to bury relatives at Mizdakhan as a sacred spot. Arrive at Nukus, unwind, and stay overnight at the hotel.

On this Day

Breakfast at the Nukus hotel is followed by a meeting with the driver and a visit to the Savitsky Museum, which features Khorezm and Karakalpak antiques, Uzbek fine arts, and a collection of Russian avant-garde works. Discover how founder Igor Savitsky gathered these pieces in the 1970s despite political risks, and how the museum later earned prominence during perestroika and the early years of Uzbekistan's independence. Drive to Khiva, stopping for photos along the way at the ruins of old Khorezm fortresses such as Ayaz-Kala and Toprak-Kala, Kushan period frontier forts built on neighboring hills in the 4th-7th centuries BCE and now sandblasted.
