Itinerary – Sella Pass Trek – 24 days

The itinerary for the trek is listed below.

On this Day

Early in the morning, participants take a beautiful flight from Islamabad to Skardu, which provides stunning aerial views of the Karakoram Range, including Nanga Parbat if the weather permits. Upon arrival, you will be transferred to your hotel and have the remainder of the day at leisure. This gives you time to acclimatize and prepare while admiring the tranquil beauty of Skardu's surrounding landscapes and mountains.

On this Day

The adventure begins with a jeep safari from Skardu through the scenic Shigar Valley to Askole, the final permanent village on the itinerary. The route follows the Braldu River and features breathtaking alpine vistas throughout. Depending on the road conditions, trekking may begin before reaching Askole. The travel takes six to eight hours and ends with the team arriving in Askole, where they prepare for the expedition's trekking part.

On this Day

After final preparations, the walk proceeds toward Jhola, with porters carrying supplies along the way. The trail runs through the valley, which connects to the massive Biafo Glacier. Participants trek across glacial moraine before descending to a lunch halt along the Korofon River. The route continues to the intersection of the Braldu and Domordo rivers, where it crosses a bridge and follows the riverbank to the Jhola campground.

On this Day

Today's hike follows the Braldu River through a magnificent gorge, providing breathtaking views of renowned peaks like Trango Towers and Cathedral Peak. The terrain is dry and exposed; sun and heat protection are required. Several glacier-fed streams must be crossed on the trip. By the end of the day, the trail has climbed away from the river to Paiju, the final campground with trees before entering the glacier zone.

On this Day

This is an important acclimatization day at Paiju Camp, allowing participants to adjust to the increased altitude. While resting, porters prepare provisions, such as making bread for the next day on the glacier. Short acclimatization walks to Paiju Peak base camp can help with fitness and altitude adaptability. The day is relaxed but vital, ensuring that trekkers are physically prepared for the more difficult parts ahead.

On this Day

The walk becomes increasingly difficult as participants enter the Baltoro Glacier, crossing uneven moraine terrain with many ascents and descents. Despite the difficulty, the panorama grows more dramatic, with stunning views of the Trango Towers and Uli Biaho. Before reaching Liligo, the route passes sections of the glacier and then follows stony trails near the glacier's edge. The day concludes at Khoburtse, where a tent is set beside the glacier.

On this Day

The journey continues across smaller glaciers, gradually increasing elevation. As you proceed, the beautiful Trango Towers appear closer, providing breathtaking views. Before reaching Urdukas, the trail requires careful walking across cold and rocky terrain. This campsite is unique in that it is located on a grassy ledge about 100 meters above the glacier, offering panoramic views of the surrounding peaks as well as a more pleasant resting area than glacier campers.

On this Day

Today's walk is fully on the Baltoro Glacier, following the medial moraine with continuous ups and downs across rough ice formations. To the south, the tall Masherbrum dominates the skyline, as do views of Muztagh Tower. Massive ice seracs flank the trail as you reach Goro II, which is at the confluence of the Baltoro and Younghusband glaciers. Temperatures drop significantly, marking a colder night at higher altitudes.

On this Day

The trail continues across the steep moraine to Concordia, one of the Karakoram's most beautiful vistas. As you move forward, numerous snow-covered peaks gradually appear, culminating in your first sight of K2. Other famous peaks, including Broad Peak, Gasherbrum, and Mitre Peak, surround the area, forming a beautiful alpine amphitheater. Concordia is typically regarded as the trek's high point.

On this Day

An early start takes you across the Godwin-Austen Glacier to Broad Peak Base Camp, followed by a visit to the historic Gilkey Memorial. The trek is long but rewarding, with K2 getting larger as you get closer. After crossing Broad Peak Base Camp, the trek continues over rocky terrain to K2 Base Camp. The Gilkey Memorial remembers climbers who perished on K2, and the views of the mountain from this position are particularly breathtaking.

On this Day

The expedition proceeds northwest from K2 Base Camp, following the upper Godwin-Austen Glacier to the isolated Sella Pass region. The landscape becomes harsher and more remote as fewer hikers travel this far. Surrounded by towering peaks, participants make their way steadily to the base of Sella Pass. The campground is built in an isolated glacial environment to prepare the crew for the following climbing days.

On this Day

These three days are dedicated to ascending and exploring Sella Pass, one of the expedition's most lonely and arduous sections. Moving over steep snowfields, glacial terrain, and rocky ridges, participants steadily gain altitude while navigating difficult conditions with the help of professional guides. The effort is rewarded with stunning views of the surrounding Karakoram giants, including K2 and Broad Peak, providing for an amazing high-altitude adventure.

On this Day

The team retraces its way back to K2 Base Camp, carefully descending over glacier terrain. After the strenuous climbing days, this return offers comfort and a chance to recover. Upon arrival, participants can unwind and reflect on their accomplishments while admiring close-up views of K2. The rest period is necessary for rehabilitation before commencing the return trek to Concordia and beyond.

On this Day

Leaving the higher camps behind, the trail gradually descends towards Goro I or Biango. The journey follows typical glacial trails, but the perspective shifts as you head in the opposite direction. Walking becomes easier as altitude decreases, but attention is still required on uneven terrain. The day concludes at a nice campsite, where participants can rest and recover further from the high-altitude hardships.

On this Day

The route continues back along the Baltoro Glacier to Khoburtse, passing via Goro I and Urdukas. Although the trail is the same, the sights feel completely different as you descend, providing new perspectives on the stunning environment. As you get closer to camp, the Trango Towers take over the skyline again. The day provides a balance of easy trekking and ongoing appreciation for the Karakoram's raw splendor.

On this Day

The trail descends further, leading from glacial terrain back to Paiju's verdant environs. The route passes through Liligo, which represents the shift from unstable moraine to more stable land. As trees emerge, the landscape feels more welcoming. Arriving at Paiju Camp is a nice break, with possibilities to relax in a more sheltered environment after days on the glacier.

On this Day

The return trek continues down the Braldu Gorge to Jhola. The terrain is easier than in earlier phases; some river crossings may still be required depending on water levels. Participants take the same gorgeous route, but see the landscape from a different angle. When you get to Jhola, you'll set up a tent by the river, providing a calm place to rest after another long day of trekking.

On this Day

The final trekking day takes you back to Askole village, following the riverbank and crossing a bridge near the village. When the participants arrive, jeeps are waiting to bring them back to Skardu. The drive is a relaxing end to the trekking segment, allowing tired legs to rest. After arriving in Skardu, participants check into their accommodation and spend a well-deserved evening relaxing.

On this Day

This day is set aside for any delays that may arise throughout the walk due to weather or logistical issues. If not required, guests can spend their time exploring Skardu's attractions, relaxing at the hotel, or visiting surrounding lakes and vistas. Having this buffer allows for greater schedule flexibility and decreases the danger of missing the return flight to Islamabad.

On this Day

Participants fly back from Skardu to Islamabad, getting one more aerial vista of the Karakoram Range. Upon arrival, a transfer to the hotel is scheduled for rest and leisure. In the event of a flight cancellation due to weather, an alternative car trip to Chilas is organized. This long but gorgeous trip ensures that travel plans remain on track despite unexpected alpine weather conditions.

On this Day

On the final day, participants are transferred to Islamabad's overseas Airport to catch their overseas flights. Depending on the departure times, there may be time for a quick rest or last-minute preparations. The expedition closes with amazing recollections of the Sella Pass Trek, the magnificence of the Karakoram, and the accomplishment of visiting one of the most remote and stunning locations on the planet.
