Itinerary – Tajikistan to Afghanistan Tour

The itinerary for the Tajikistan to Afghanistan trip appears below.

On this Day

The route from Dushanbe leads south to the border crossing at Shir Khan Bandar. Afghan visas are obtained with help upon arrival before traveling to Kunduz to complete necessary permits for Badakhshan Province. The journey then continues to Faizabad, a provincial hamlet situated in the mountains that serves as the starting point for the first night in Afghanistan.

On this Day

Leaving Faizabad behind, the path continues southeast to Ishkashim, a small hamlet that serves as the gateway to the Wakhan Corridor. The drive takes you through fertile valleys and magnificent mountain vistas, while the city life gives place to rural settings. Ishkashim is located at the confluence of the Panj and Wakhan rivers and serves as an important halt for groceries and permits. The town has a rich atmosphere, thanks to its marketplaces, Wakhi culture, and cross-border history. The overnight stay is in Ishkashim.

On this Day

The trip continues deeper into the Wakhan Corridor, following tiny mountain roads surrounded by craggy peaks and glacial rivers. This is the Wakhi people's country, and their way of life has persisted for centuries. Along the journey, little stone settlements develop, where inhabitants tend livestock or walk long distances, greeting guests warmly. The day concludes in the village of Qala-e-Panj, where the group rests in amid the peaceful solitude of the high mountains.

On this Day

Today's path leads to Sarhad-e-Broghil, the last village on the Wakhan Corridor and one of Afghanistan's most remote villages. The drive is slow but stunning, with wild rivers, glaciers hanging from cliffs, and breathtaking mountain views around every corner. Sarhad is the entryway to the Pamir Mountains, where highways turn into historic pathways used by herders to reach summer pastures. It is a place that few people ever visit, and the sensation of solitude is palpable.

On this Day

This day is dedicated to finding the tranquil magic of Sarhad-e-Broghil. Without any roads stretching beyond, the settlement feels timeless and otherworldly, surrounded by massive peaks and valleys. The party will explore on foot, visiting Wakhi homes and experiencing the rhythms of a lifestyle that has not altered in decades. The hospitality here is genuine, with warm greetings, curious youngsters, and a glimpse into a basic yet robust life.

On this Day

After enjoying the tranquil appeal of Sarhad-e-Broghil, the return journey begins by retracing the path back through the Wakhan Corridor. This leg of the journey provides additional opportunity to explore the distant settlements and alpine valleys, as well as gain new perspectives on the snow-covered mountains and sweeping panoramas that distinguish the corridor. The group heads back to Ishkashim for the night.

On this Day

The journey continues to Faizabad, the capital of Badakhshan Province. Passing through mountain routes, river valleys, and villages again, passengers will have time to think on their days in the corridor. The route highlights the mountainous grandeur of northern Afghanistan while also providing a comfortable return to the province capital for rest.

On this Day

The journey back to Tajikistan begins with a drive through Kunduz Province, where the alpine scenery give way to lowlands as the highway continues north. The Afghan journey concludes at Shir Khan Bandar, where the border with Tajikistan is crossed. The experience comes to an end when we arrive in Dushanbe, leaving us with enduring impressions of the Wakhan Corridor's beauty, people, and unparalleled remoteness.

On this Day

After traveling through Tajikistan and Afghanistan, it is time to depart. Travelers will return to the airport for their next flights, leaving with them memories of a rare journey into one of the world's most distant and culturally diverse frontiers.
