Itinerary – Balkh Tour

The itinerary for the Balkh Tour appears below.

On this Day

The day is dedicated to the celebration of Jahenda Bala, a prominent religious ritual celebrated on the first day of Nauruz at Mazar-e-Sharif's renowned Blue Mosque. This elaborate celebration, attended by high-ranking officials such as ministries, province governors, and even the vice president, is thought to mark the location of Prophet Muhammad's cousin and son-in-law, Ali ibn Abi Talib's tomb. Later that day, we join the masses to watch the exciting Buzkashi event, Afghanistan's national horse sport. This exhilarating display, performed by highly trained riders in the northern regions, combines tradition, athleticism, and cultural pride.

On this Day

The journey continues to Samangan, where we will see the magnificent Takht-i Rustam, commonly known as the Throne of Rustam, named after the mythical ruler of Persian mythology. This hilltop settlement is among Afghanistan's most impressive archaeological monuments. Here, we explore the old Buddhist caves and stupas carved into the mountainside, which serve as a stark reminder of the region's pre-Islamic origins. The Buddhist stupa, formed like a mound, is one of the earliest architectural linkages to Buddhism in Afghanistan, combining history, spirituality, and natural beauty in a single spot.

On this Day

Traveling to the ancient city of Balkh, also known as Ummul-Bilad or "Mother of Cities," we learn about its historical significance as a center of Buddhism, Sufism, and Zoroastrianism. The day begins with a visit to the Haji Piyada Mosque, also known as the Mosque of the Walking Pilgrim, and ends with a visit to the Tomb of Rabia Balkhi, a legendary poetess who is regarded as one of the first women to produce New Persian verses. We proceed to Khoja Parsa Mosque and the spectacular Bala Hisar, a historic stronghold attributed to Alexander the Great. Alexander demolished the Persian Empire, crossed the Amu Darya, and married Roxana in Bactria, solidifying Balkh's place in history.

On this Day

On the final day, you will be taken to the airport or to the Uzbek border for your next destination. The Balkh Tour concludes with amazing recollections of ancient cities, spiritual locations, and vibrant Nauruz festivals.
