Itinerary – Burzil Pass Trek – Astore to Kashmir (10 Days)

The itinerary for the trek is shown below.

On this Day

Leave Chilas and follow the Karakoram Highway toward the Astore junction near Jaglot. Turn into Astore Valley and follow the Astore River through steep gorges, cultivated terraces, and isolated towns. Stop at viewpoints to see Nanga Parbat and the meeting landscape of the great northern ranges. Arrive in Astore town, make local arrangements, inspect equipment, and meet the support team. Stay at Astore to allow the troop to relax before moving on to higher and more restricted terrain.

On this Day

Use this day for acclimatization and last logistical preparations in Astore. Travel toward Rama Valley, walk through pine forest and open meadows, and then continue to Rama Lake if trail conditions allow. The expedition gives moderate altitude exposure before the path ascends to Burzil Pass. Return to Astore to assess camping gear, organize porter loads, and confirm authorization with local authorities.

On this Day

Drive from Astore to Gorikot and Chilam Chowki, where paperwork and route clearances are verified. Continue across the upper valley to Burzil Pass, which rises to around 13,808 feet over vast alpine slopes and an ancient caravan trail. Stop for a glimpse of the surrounding ridges, seasonal snowfields, and the Astore River's headwaters. Descend into Minimarg over distant military-controlled terrain. Set up camp or a hotel.

On this Day

Begin the trekking stage from the Minimarg side after receiving a briefing from local guides and security staff. Follow the designated trail to the Kamri corridor, passing through grassy slopes, stream channels, and solitary summer grazing regions. Because the path is rural and evacuation alternatives are limited, progress is methodical and steady. Arrive at the chosen campsite near the upper valley, pitch your tents, and discuss the next stage with the guides. All movement must adhere to the exact track and directions issued by the authorities.

On this Day

Continue along the lonely Kamri trail, ascending and descending through small valleys, alpine pastures, and steep climbs. Depending on the accepted alignment, the group may use the Dudgai or Gagai Nala method to connect the Minimarg side with Taobat. Porters and guides handle river crossings, route finding, and campground choosing. Reach a protected camp below the last descent into Neelum Valley. The environment progressively shifts from open highland terrain to greener slopes with lush vegetation.

On this Day

Continue your journey via the lower Kamri corridor, eventually arriving in Taobat, the upper Neelum Valley's final hamlet. Before arriving at the Neelum River scenery, the walk winds through forested slopes, streams, and pastureland. Enter Taobat solely via the route designated for the group, and then fulfill all necessary reporting formalities. Check into a guesthouse or a permitted campsite and relax by the river. This stage concludes the ancient mountain crossing from Astore to Azad Jammu & Kashmir.

On this Day

Leave Taobat in a four-wheel-drive car and drive up the rough Neelum Valley road into Kel. Continue through Halmat, Sardari, and other riverbank communities, with stops scheduled based on road and security situations. From Kel, head toward Sharda, traveling through forested mountains and towns along the Neelum River. When access is open, visit Sharda and explore the surrounding area around the old university ruins. Overnight stay in Sharda.

On this Day

The Neelum Valley road leads from Sharda to Muzaffarabad. Pass via Keran, Kundal Shahi, Athmuqam, and picturesque riverfront parts carved by high forested slopes. Stops may be made at safe vistas and local communities, subject to traffic and road conditions. After leaving the Neelum Valley, follow the river corridor to Muzaffarabad. Check into a motel to end the remote adventure on a relaxing note, while the team organizes equipment and completes voyage records.

On this Day

Depart Muzaffarabad for Islamabad via the lower mountain valleys. Depending on traffic, weather, and road conditions, the route may take you through Kohala, Murree, and onto the highway. Before heading toward the capital, take a break at a suitable viewpoint or wayside facility. After crossing from Astore into Azad Kashmir, go to Islamabad to complete the Burzil Pass and Kamri route excursion. The tour concludes with participant drop-off at the agreed-upon location.
