Itinerary – Wakhan Corridor Trekking

The itinerary for the Wakhan Corridor Trek is given below.

On this Day

Take a long overland drive from Kabul to Faizabad, passing through spectacular scenery as you enter northern Afghanistan. Overnight in Faizabad at a local guesthouse or motel.

Driving: 12 hours | Altitude: 1,200m

On this Day

Drive from Faizabad to Ishkashim, where the necessary paperwork will be completed before going on into the Wakhan region. Stay overnight at Ishkashim in a guesthouse.

Driving: 4–5 hours | Altitude: 2,600m

On this Day

Complete final preparations and obtain permits to enter the Wakhan Corridor. The road from Ishkashim to Sarhad-e Broghil follows the historic Silk Road, passing via Afghanistan's highest peak, Noshaq, and the revered Baba Tungi (Jade Peak). Before continuing on to Qala-e Panja, make a stop in Khandud hamlet for more paperwork. Overnight at a guesthouse.

Driving: 6–8 hours | Altitude: 2,800m

Continue through the Wakhan to the trek's trailhead at Sarhad-e Broghil. Final preparations are being made, including hiring yaks and horses to transport equipment. Local women distribute freshly baked bread to aid the trek. A guesthouse in Sarhad-e Broghil will serve as your overnight accommodation.

Trekking: 4 hours | Altitude: 3,250m

On this Day

Begin walking into the Pamirs on one of the most difficult days of the adventure. The route crosses three mountain crossings, including the Daliz Pass at 4,260m, which has a difficult ascent and offers panoramic views. Camp near the river at Shawr.

Trekking: 7 hours | Altitude: 3,450m

On this Day

Continue along the valley to Borak, crossing a wooden bridge before ascending to a stunning high traverse. Along the way, you will come across Wakhi nomads caring to their herds. Spend the night in a tent at Sang e Nauishdah.

Trekking: 6–7 hours | Altitude: 4,100m

On this Day

Trek from Sang e Nauishdah to Nauabad in one day, passing to the west bank of the river and gradually ascending up the valley. In Nauabad, spend the night in a tent.

Trekking: 4–5 hours | Altitude: 4,200m

On this Day

Face the most difficult day of the trek, climbing the Uween Sar Pass at 4,850m, the highest point of the route. After reaching the summit by midday, descend to the Wakhi village of Ghughumdeh, where warm hospitality awaits. Tents are used for overnight stays.

Trekking: 8 hours | Altitude: 4,300m

Take a full relaxation day in Ghughumdeh. Travelers can relax, enjoy the high mountain beauty, or go for a short walk to help local families with their goats and sheep. Tents are used for overnight stays.

Continue your trip with a climb to the Agbelis Pass at 4,600m, which offers breathtaking mountain vistas. After lunch, continue on to Kurchin, the first Kyrgyz town met on the trail. Kurchin offers overnight accommodations in tents.

Trekking: 6–7 hours | Altitude: 4,100m

Descend from the high Pamir to the vast plains, camping near the Kyrgyz camp of Bozai Gombaz. If possible, pay a visit to the little local school made famous by "Stones Into Schools." Tents are used for overnight stays.

Trekking: 4–5 hours | Altitude: 3,900m

Trek to Chaqmaqtin Lake, a 9-kilometer-long alpine lake near the source of the Amu Darya. This is where Kyrgyz nomads graze their livestock in the summer, and Bactrian camel trains can be seen. Stay overnight in tents beside the lake.

Trekking: 4–5 hours | Altitude: 4,050m

Spend the day relaxing beside Chaqmaqtin Lake, with the option of a short hike. Gain a unique and immersive perspective on Kyrgyz nomadic traditions and lifestyle. Tents are used for overnight stays.

Begin the return journey by trekking down the valley from Chaqmaqtin Lake to Bozai Gombaz, where Kyrgyz villagers reside in summer pastures. Tents are used for overnight stays.

Trekking: 2–3 hours | Altitude: 3,900m

On this Day

Leave Kyrgyz communities behind and go along the Oxus River valley on a recently constructed jeep track. Take a lunch break in Sarhad-e Broghil before continuing on to Qala-e Panja. Stay overnight in a tent or a guesthouse.

Driving: 4–6 hours | Altitude: 2,800m

On this Day

Drive back to Ishkishim via the Wakhan Corridor. River levels are low during this season, making road conditions easier. Upon arrival, say goodbye to the Wakhi guides. Overnight at a guesthouse.

Driving: 4–6 hours | Altitude: 2,600m

Depending on road conditions, travel out of the Wakhan mountains and back to the provincial city of Faizabad or beyond to Kunduz. Overnight at a guesthouse.

Driving: 10 hours | Altitude: 300m

Travel across the Hindu Kush on a long drive back to Kabul, traveling through the Salang Pass and Salang Tunnel. Stay overnight in a Kabul hotel.

Driving: 10–12 hours | Altitude: 1,800m

On this Day

Spend the day touring Kabul's main attractions, such as Babur's Gardens, the Sakhi Shrine, and the bustling bazaars in the old city. Stay overnight in Kabul at a hotel.

Altitude: 1,800m

On this Day

Transfer to the airport for your onward journey, which concludes your Wakhan Corridor Trekking excursion.

 

Why Register Early?

1. Early Bird Discount: The given prices for the holiday are limited-time discount offers and are subject to change. Service providers including (but not limited) to airlines and hotels increase prices in peak-season. Early reservations cost less than peak-season. 

2. Limited Flight Seats: Domestic flight seats to the Pamir and Himalayas are sold out way ahead of time because there are only two daily flights during peak season. Among other things, the deposit is used to book domestic flights for you in advance.

3. Pay Balance after arrival in Afghanistan: In these unusual times, we appreciate that paying the final balance for your trip may cause concern. Our policy is to only receive your final balance once you arrive in Afghanistan. The only payment before arrival is the deposit.

4. Deposit valid for 3 years: We understand the uncertainty surrounding the pandemic (Covid-19). As part of our relaxed booking conditions following Covid-19, deposits are valid for 2 years. 

6. Pay Minimum Deposit: The deposits for the holiday are also early-bird discounts and automatically change accordingly:

  • 1st November: USD 290
  • 1st January: USD 350
  • 15th February: USD 400
  • 1st March: USD 450
  • 1st May: USD 490

Refund Policy for All

Deposit: Once paid, the deposit is non-refundable (but valid for 2 years) as it will be spent on making in-country arrangements. 

Balance: Pay the balance only after arrival in Afghanistan on the first day. Payment guidelines will be shared timely.

Currency

All international travelers can pay in US Dollars (USD) or equivalent in Euros (EUR) or Pound Sterling (GBP). Pakistani travelers are charged the equivalent in Pakistani Rupees (PKR).

Single Supplement

Separate hotel rooms (single supplement) will cost an additional USD 290. This includes all hotel nights. This payment should be made with the balance upon arrival.

Separate tents (single tent) will cost an additional USD 180. This includes the cost of additional porterage. This payment should also be made with the balance in Afghanistan.
