Itinerary – Wakhan Valley Trek

The itinerary for the Wakhan Trek is given below.

On this Day

Pick up your traditional Afghan attire before embarking on a difficult overland journey north. The trek takes you across the Kushan Pass, through countless switchbacks, before descending into rolling hills and along the Darya-Qonduz River. The long drive concludes in Kunduz, where you will spend the night at a local hotel.

On this Day

Leave Kunduz behind and follow the route to the Wakhan Corridor's entrance. Arrive in Ishkashim, a Tajik border town and commerce hub that serves as a gateway to Afghanistan's distant frontier. Depending on road conditions, the journey can be lengthy, but the reward is reaching this critical starting point for your Wakhan trip.

On this Day

Spend the day in Ishkashim organizing for licenses and, if necessary, obtaining an escort from local authorities. If the process is completed earlier than predicted, the group may proceed to Qila e Panja ahead of schedule. Otherwise, the day provides time to adjust to living on the outskirts of the Wakhan Corridor.

On this Day

Set off by jeep on undeveloped roads, following the Afghan side of the Panj River as it meanders between Afghanistan and Tajikistan. The trek provides vistas of the "Big Pamir," which stretches eastward to Lake Zorkul. The objective is Qila e Panja, a historic Wakhi settlement that previously housed the Mir, ruler of the entire Wakhan Corridor.

On this Day

Continue your journey into the Corridor by jeep, this time along the less-traveled Little Pamir River valley. This rural route goes to Sarhad e Broghil, a village of about 500 Wakhi people. The overland vehicles are left behind, indicating that the Wakhan Valley Trek will continue on foot.

On this Day

The final supplies are loaded onto pack animals as the hiking portion begins. The lower river path allows for progressive acclimatization, with evenings spent camping in tents alongside the Little Pamir. Along the trip, you'll pass rudimentary shepherd tents and yak caravans, immersing yourself in the wilderness as you make your way toward Bozai Gumbaz.

On this Day

Depart Bozai Gumbaz, home to domed graves commemorating this historic caravan route, and continue along the trail that originally connected the Wakhan to the Wakhjir Pass in China. Arrive in Chaqmaqtin Lake in the evening, a breathtaking high-altitude body of water tucked in the Pamir Mountains. Set your tents among the Kyrgyz nomadic yurt camps and spend the night on the edge of the Little Pamir.

On this Day

Take a break from the walk and spend two days among the Kyrgyz nomads. Join daily chores like yak milking, butter tea preparation, and flatbread baking to learn about these herders' tough summer lives as they prepare for the severe winter. Evenings provide magnificent stargazing over one of the most remote locations on Earth, with tents pitched up near Kyrgyz encampment.

On this Day

Continue eastward toward Kashch Goz, the final Kyrgyz town on the trail. Stories told over a yak-dung stove provide an intimate look into the nomadic existence. The colorful interiors of yurts contrast with the desolate Pamir plateau outside, reminding you of the environment's beauty as well as its difficulty. Overnight camp near the settlement.

On this Day

Return to trekking over the steep route of the Little Pamir Valley with your pack animals. Over three days, travel between secluded Wakhi communities, climbing steep passes and admiring stunning vistas of the Pamirs. The Wakhi live in permanent stone dwellings and cultivate their land using glacier-fed irrigation systems. Camping continues along this leg, with the option to spend the night in a Wakhi home along the way.

On this Day

Leave Borak behind and cross the Daliz Pass, pausing to take in the magnificent vistas of the Little Pamir. Descend to Sarhad e Broghil for one final night in this secluded settlement. If open, a local hot spring is the ideal place to relax before sleeping in a guesthouse.

On this Day

Before continuing your journey in the jeep, say goodbye to the pack animals and their handlers. The route returns to Qila e Panja via the junction of the Little Pamir and Pamir Rivers, where you will stay at a guesthouse in this old Wakhi settlement.

On this Day

Continue your descent by jeep toward Ishkashim, retracing your route along the Panj River. Stay at a guesthouse in Ishkashim, which was previously home to a popular cross-border market with Tajikistan but has since closed.

On this Day

Travel overland through Badakhshan Province, which historically encompassed Afghanistan, Tajikistan's Gorno-Badakhshan, and China's Xinjiang. The long drive concludes in Kunduz, where you will spend the night in a hotel.

On this Day

Climb back into the Hindu Kush and pass via the Soviet-built Salang Tunnel, passing stunning avalanche galleries that protect this vital road throughout the winter. After a difficult ride back to Kabul, check into your final accommodation.

On this Day

Spend the day visiting Kabul's lively bazaars and old streets. Wander down Bird Street and Chicken Street for local crafts, antiques, and souvenirs, or get a portrait taken using one of the city's last wooden box cameras. Before you leave, try authentic Kabuli pulao and explore the capital.

On this Day

Your journey through the Wakhan Valley is now complete. marked the conclusion of an incredible trip through Afghanistan by dropping you off at the airport for your departure.

Overview – Wakhan Valley Trek

The Wakhan Trek is a unique journey into Afghanistan’s most distant frontier, where the steep Pamir Mountains and the fabled Oxus River shape vistas that appear untouched by time. This 23-day adventure follows the tiny Wakhan Corridor, passing through austere valleys, alpine meadows, and windswept high mountains. It allows visitors to explore spectacular natural beauty while following old caravan routes that formerly connected Central Asia to the Silk Road.

Beyond the landscape, the walk provides a cultural immersion into the life of the Wakhi and Kyrgyz people that inhabit this remote region. From visiting Kyrgyz nomads in their yurt camps alongside Chaqmaqtin Lake to staying in Wakhi communities irrigated by glaciers, each encounter shows traditions preserved on the “Roof of the World.” The Wakhan Trek blends adventure, history, and human connection in an area where few visitors have gone.
