Itinerary – Hispar Glacier Trek

The itinerary for the trek is listed below.

On this Day

Leave Hispar Village and start climbing toward Bitanmal at 3,808 meters. Follow the valley above the Hispar River, crossing tiny streams and eventually approaching the massive debris-covered glacier. The trail alternates between grassy slopes, rocky portions, and lateral moraine, providing the first close views of the Hispar Glacier and its surrounding peaks. Continue cautiously across rocky terrain until you reach Bitanmal, a historic grazing area near the glacier. Set up camp and sleep overnight in the desolate Karakoram environment.

On this Day

Continue from Bitanmal to Shigam Baris at 4,168 metres, following the northern side of the Hispar Glacier. The trail ascends through ablation basins, loose moraine, alpine pastures, and areas that overlook highly fractured ice. Depending on the season, crossing several tributary streams may necessitate caution. As altitude rises, vegetation decreases, and the mountain panorama becomes more striking. Reach Shigam Baris, a small grassland campsite surrounded by glacier-carved ridges and distant snow peaks, and pitch up camp for the night.

On this Day

Depart Shigam Baris and ascend to Yutmaru at 4,328 metres. The day entails navigating moraine ridges, loose scree, glacial streams, and portions along the tributary Yutmaru Glacier. Because glacier surfaces and stream channels change seasonally, it is critical to plan your journey carefully. Beyond the hard crossings, continue to a sheltered alpine campground with views of Hispar La and the Balchish range. Arrive at Yutmaru, set up your tent, and rest while adjusting to the increasingly high altitude.

On this Day

Trek from Yutmaru to Khani Basa at 4,513 meters, then deeper into the upper Hispar Glacier basin. Descend to the glacier and traverse the fractured Khani Basa tributary, where crevasses, ice walls, and unstable moraine necessitate careful navigation. Continue down the glacier margin, amid hanging ice and sheer mountain slopes, with stunning views of Kanjut Sar and Hispar Muztagh. Reach Khani Basa, set up the high camp, review glacier safety protocols, and recover before the last ascent to Hispar La.

On this Day

Begin early from Khani Basa for the strenuous climb to Hispar La, 5,151 metres. Travel across the upper glacier, utilizing ropes and technical equipment when crevasses or snow bridges require protection. The moderate climb leads to the huge pass that connects Hispar Glacier, Snow Lake, and Biafo Glacier. In clear weather, enjoy panoramic views of both glacial systems and the neighboring Karakoram ranges. After reaching the pass, cautiously descend to Khani Basa and prepare to retrace your steps.

On this Day

After leaving Hispar La early, make a careful descent across the upper Hispar Glacier toward Khani Basa. Follow the guides through crevassed snowfields, changing ice formations, and large glacial portions where ropes may be required. As the elevation drops, vistas of Hispar Muztagh and the surrounding peaks become more visible. Cross the fractured Khani Basa Glacier with caution, then return to the usual campsite at 4,513 metres. Set up camp, have a nice lunch, and recover from the strenuous pass crossing.

On this Day

Leave Khani Basa and retrace your steps to Yutmaru at 4,328 metres. Cross the Khani Basa fracture zone with caution before following the lateral moraine above Hispar Glacier. The trail provides stunning views of hanging glaciers, towering ice cliffs, and distant Karakoram mountains. Continue across rocky terrain and seasonal streams, changing the route to reflect current glacier conditions. Arrive at Yutmaru, set up camp near the tributary glacier, and relax in the evening after another exhausting day in lonely high-altitude country.

On this Day

Depart Yutmaru and descend to Shigam Baris at 4,168 metres, along the same route along the northern side of Hispar Glacier. Navigate loose moraine, scree slopes, and changing meltwater channels with the help of the local crew. As the altitude progressively drops, little patches of alpine vegetation return. Enjoy panoramic views of the glacier before arriving at the grassy campsite in Shigam Baris. Set up camp, unwind, and prepare for the descent toward Bitanmal.

On this Day

Continue from Shigam Baris to Bitanmal (3,808 metres), passing through ablation valleys, rocky moraine, and alpine grazing regions. Cross glacier streams with caution, since water levels may alter during warmer daytime hours. The surrounding area grows greener, and views of Hispar Glacier remain magnificent behind the group. Reach Bitanmal and set up camp near the traditional pasture frequented by local communities. Spend the evening relaxing, drying equipment, and enjoying the warmer temperatures at a lower elevation.

On this Day

Leave Bitanmal and follow the descending trail to Hispar village. Walk along the glacier's lower edge before proceeding via steep slopes, grassy terraces, and tiny stream crossings. The austere glacier environment gives way to cultivated fields and village settings over time. After finishing the mountain journey, arrive in Hispar Village, meet the locals, and bid the trekking crew farewell. Camp nearby, eat a well-deserved lunch, and relax before driving to Karimabad.

On this Day

After breakfast, leave Hispar Village by jeep and travel across the mountainous Hispar Valley to Nagar Khas. The road winds through tiny gorges, riverbanks, and mountain slopes, providing final vistas of the isolated landscapes visited during the walk. Continue through Nagar Valley and rejoin the main path to Hunza. Arrive in Karimabad and transfer to the hotel, where the excursion will end.

Overview – Hispar Glacier Trek

The Hispar Glacier Trek (Hispar Village to Hispar La) is a strenuous hike across Nagar Valley’s isolated Karakoram terrain. Starting in Hispar Village, the journey travels steep terrain alongside one of Pakistan’s longest glaciers. Furthermore, hikers pass through alpine pastures, rocky moraines, glacial streams, and changeable ice formations. Every day offers breathtaking vistas of towering peaks, deep valleys, and vast ice landscapes. Meanwhile, camps at Bitanmal, Shigam Baris, Yutmaru, and Khani Basa facilitate steady elevation rise. As a result, appropriate acclimatization, competent leadership, and dependable equipment remain critical throughout the journey.

Eventually, the trail leads to Hispar La, which is approximately 5,151 metres above sea level. From the pass, trekkers may see Hispar Glacier, Snow Lake, and the Biafo glacial system. However, crevasses, unstable moraine, and unexpected weather changes make this path extremely difficult. As a result, the journey is best suited to experienced travelers with strong fitness and previous high-altitude experience. After crossing the pass, the group returns to Hispar Village using the same route. Finally, a picturesque drive through Nagar Valley concludes the excursion in Karimabad. Overall, this excursion offers glacier trekking, alpine views, cultural contacts, and an authentic Karakoram experience.
